| Q: What’s better, bottled water or tap? A: Extensive studies have shown that bottle water is not superior to tap. In fact, the opposite may be true. Tap water is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency and carries higher standards than the Food and Drug Administration that regulates bottled water. And although bottled water brags pictures of mountain rivers and streams, bottling plants are not required by law to disclose their water source. A report by the Natural Resources Defense Council stated that as much as 40% of our bottled water is nothing more than treated tap water! Aquafina, for example, treats and bottles municipal water from Detroit, Fresno, and other cities. Aside from the fact that bottled and tap water both carry risks, sheer price alone may be a better reason to give up your bottled water habits. A multi-billion dollar industry, bottled water costs $5-10 a gallon compared with $.01 per gallon for water from the tap. If taste is a concern, listen to this: a blind taste test performed by ABC’s 20/20 concluded that people actually prefer the taste of tap water. Evian, the most expensive of all, actually scored the lowest for satisfying taste. (Evian backwards, by the way, spells… naïve.) No matter what your choice for water source, use these guidelines to stay safe and healthy. For bottled water: • Buy a major brand from a company that belongs to the International Bottling Water Association (www.bottledwater.org) and buy from a store that sells a lot so you are ensured a fresh supply • Store in a cool place, refrigerate after opening, and drink within two days of opening. For tap water: • Run the tap for 30 seconds every morning to clear chemicals that may have leached from the pipes during the night • Let sit for a few hours to help eliminate the chlorine taste and improve taste • Have a professional test your tap for purity The information provided for the article comes from Nutrition Action and Environmental Nutrition Both are available by subscription. |
