Sports Drinks
Q:  Are sports drinks beneficial?

A: Gatorade, Powerade and the like are specially brewed beverages designed for
endurance athletes, not fitness enthusiasts.  Unless you are exercising for more than
two hours, water and sensible nutrition habits are all you need to properly rehydrate
your body.  When you sweat, you do lose water and electrolytes, but not to a point
where a fabricated drink is necessary.  Sweating is a normal physiological mechanism
that cools the body anytime it produces excess heat (during exercise, on a hot day, or
before a nerve-wracking event).  Your body would not have developed this ability if it
were unhealthy or unsafe – it is smarter than that!
If you are trying to lose weight, sports drinks will add calories to your diet without
providing real nutrition or making you feel full.  Choose water for a calorie-free way to
stay hydrated!  If you are an endurance athlete, sports drinks may be beneficial since
they instantaneously replace sodium lost in sweat and provide calories in the form of
carbohydrates to give you energy to help you maintain your performance.   They may
help performance, but are not essential for health or safety.  After all, Olympic
marathoners lived to tell of their tale before the multi-million dollar sports drink
industry was born.
