Post-Workout Nutrition
Q: I finish my workout late, around 8pm, and even though I am very hungry afterwards
I’m worried that this is too late to eat.  What do you recommend?

A: It is imperative that you eat after an intense resistance training workout, no
matter how late.  Imagine your muscles are a sponge, and during your workout the
sponge is squeezed out.   The sooner you eat after your workout, the more food (in the
form of glucose) your muscles soak up and store to be used for tomorrow’s activity.  If
you feel exhausted during your workout, think about what you ate yesterday, not
today.

You should replenish yourself with approximately 200-300 calories (more if you are
trying to gain muscle mass) in the form of simple, healthy carbohydrates, and protein.
For example, make a fruit smoothie with one cup frozen strawberries, 1/2 frozen
banana, 1 scoop low-carb protein powder, and ice.  Blend for a delicious post-workout
treat!!   After a cardio workout, a piece of fruit will suffice.
