Naked Brand Smoothies
Q: In your newsletter you mentioned to stay away from fruit smoothies and other
similar drinks due to the high calories.  I love the brand "Naked" fruit smoothies.
They are pretty high in calories, but also contain some great vitamins and nutrients.
Can I still drink them, or should I stay away and try to supplement my diet with more
real fruits?  The Naked brand claims to have a pound of fruit in every bottle.  I drink
the green machine, blue machine and red machine.  The others I don't drink.  What are
your thoughts?  -Julia Spicer Raleigh, NC

A: Naked smoothies contain calories, the equivalent of a small milkshake from
McDonald’s.  To make matters worse, in juiced form you are missing out on the fiber
you would otherwise get from the skin and pulp of the whole fruit.  The sugar in these
drinks goes directly to your bloodstream where it is either used for fuel, or continues
into the cell where it replaces depleted glucose stores (for example, if you just
worked out). Or, if you are not in need or additional energy it will be stored as fat.  In
other words, a juice smoothie (or piece of fruit) will help your performance by
providing immediate energy before a physically demanding task, it will replenish your
energy after an intense workout, or, if you are the average sedentary American it will
inevitably add more padding to your hips, thighs and belly.

Bottom line: If you are trying to lose weight, don’t drink your calories!  Fruit
smoothies will pack 'em in without keeping you full, and although they provide
antioxidants, you are best off eating the whole food.  And even then, limit your fruit
intake to 2-3 pieces a day while filling up on as many vegetables as you can stand!

If you are concerned that your diet lacks in vitamins and minerals take a supplement.
I recommend (and take) Juice Plus+ - fruits and veggies in a pill.  It's an unbelievable
product that provides the equivalent of 17 servings of fruits and veggies a day, with
only a trivial amount of calories.  Visit the
Juice Plus website for more info.

And remember, drink water and eat food!
