| Q: Can someone please decipher the mixed messages regarding carbohydrates? A: The truth about carbohydrates is, fortunately, not as controversial and confusing as the popular media leads us to believe. Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins all have specific functions in our bodies and are needed, in some amount, to sustain life. Carbohydrates provide energy, they fuel the brain for thinking (your teachers were on to something when they instructed you to eat a good breakfast before a test), and are an imperative component in hormone regulation. A carbohydrate, in and of itself, is not the culprit for America’s obesity epidemic. What happens to that carbohydrate through chemical processing and other product “enhancement” techniques is the real issue. Fruits and veggies are nearly one hundred percent carbohydrate, but the chances of growing fat because of a diet too high in fruits and vegetables would be nearly impossible – you would have to eat more food than your stomach could hold. I recommend these simple, but fool-proof guidelines for improved health and weight loss. DON’T: skip your fruits and veggies! From this point forward, they are officially a part of every meal! DO: avoid anything with added or concentrated sugar – soda, juice, candy, sweet sauces. DON’T: wander the aisles – if you do, expect to grab that bag of cookies you’ve been thinking about. DO: get in the habit of shopping the perimeter of the grocery store. DON’T: Feel guilty if you have a bad day – many people lived long and happy lives before the carbohydrate craze. DO: remember that our bodies are made to EAT… just not everything in sight. |
