| Last month I discussed the “good” foods that should be consumed to optimize energy and health. This month is dedicated to those “bad” foods that will compromise your immune system, disturb your mood, and lead to a less-than-flattering figure. In general, if it is in a box, bag or can and is not 100% whole wheat, oatmeal, rice, bran, beans or another complex carbohydrate, DON’T BUY IT! Likewise, any product claiming to have “25% less… (fill in the blank)” should be avoided. Although it’s fact, there are no labels on broccoli or berries that say “100% less fat and sodium than potato chips.” But perhaps they should… maybe if they did, people would be more inclined to put them in their shopping carts. If the product claims to be “fortified,” have “improved taste,” or says “now, with (no) added… (fill in the blank),” keep on walking. Avoid the center aisles of the grocery store as much as possible and stick to the perimeter. The food industry won’t like it, since this is how they make their money, but your body sure will! No matter what anyone tells you, chocolate is NOT a healthy replacement for other mood balancing foods (try celery and cucumbers instead) and obviously you should avoid candy, soda and other high sugar products. Need a little flavor in your life? Try using spices, or add naturally sweet veggies to your meals. Sautéed red peppers, caramelized onions, mushrooms and garlic, for example, are a great way to top off a tender chicken breast or egg white omelet. Food companies pay their marketing specialists big bucks to trick consumers into buying their unhealthy and addicting products. (Yes, certain foods have the same affect on your body chemistry and can be as addictive as alcohol.) Be strong, use your common sense and remember mom’s voice in your head reminding you to finish your veggies before indulging in dessert. But instead of mom’s 7-layer cake, try fresh fruit to satisfy your sweet tooth! Your immune system and waste line will thank you. |
