Alcohol
Q: I’ve heard that red wine is good for me.  Is this true?

A: It has been found that alcohol itself, rather than any ingredient unique to red wine,
provides health benefits.  Moderate alcohol consumption can reduce your risk of heart
disease, gallstones, and possibly diabetes and strokes.  (www.mayoclinic.com)
Moderate consumption is one drink per day or 2 drinks per day for men under 65.  A
drink consists of 12 oz. of beer, 5 oz. of wine, or 1.5 oz. of hard liquor.  This daily
guideline is just that – a DAILY guideline.  Your daily allowance cannot be “rolled over”
to the weekend, as binge drinking has serious negative effects on the health of your
body.
Drinking alcohol is, of course, not a prerequisite to good health, and if you are a non
drinker I do not recommend starting.  There are people who should avoid alcohol
entirely, for example if you are pregnant, take medication, or have alcoholism in your
family.  But, if you currently enjoy a glass of wine or beer with dinner, there is little
need to trouble yourself over the negative consequence of this habit.  Raise your glass
to that!
